Chapter 21
Jack
After Mackenzie woke from her nap, we headed above deck. The three of us shared the skipperâs bench, the wind in our hair, as we spent the afternoon cruising around the lake.
Soon, the sun began its journey to the horizon. Although we had plenty of daylight left, I knew our day together was coming to an end.
âAfter a day like this,â Emma said, stretching in a sunbeam, âitâs going to be real hard going back to work tomorrow.â
âSo donât go,â I said with a shrug. âYou know you wonât have to work anymore, right?â I glanced at her from the side of my eye, making sure she understood my meaning.
She looked at me and clicked her tongue. âYouâre bad, Jack. You know that?â
âBad, Jack!â Mackenzie agreed, like a gleeful parrot. I ruffled her hair.
âYou canât tell me youâre not tempted,â I teased Emma.
âIâm beyond tempted,â she mused. âThatâs the problem.â
âI know. I was only joking.â I paused. âSort of.â
âSoon, okay?â Emma asked. She happily sighed. âIf things keep going like this ⦠I wonât need long.â
âThatâs good to hear,â I said. I put my arm around her shoulder, discreetly, so Mackenzie wouldnât see.
âWe should probably head back, though. Itâs getting late.â
âAye, aye,â I said, turning the boat around and heading for home.
Back at home, I parked the boat back in the garage and shut her down. Mackenzie didnât want to get off. She parked herself on the skipperâs bench, clasped her hands around the wheel, and refused to leave. She was having a mini-meltdown.
âSorry,â Emma said. âSheâs had a long day.â
âHey, itâs no problem.â
âI wanna go fishing,â Mack quietly sniffled to herself.
I grabbed Emmaâs elbow and pulled her close. âPst. I donât know how you want to handle this, but we could cast off the boat house balcony a few times if you think itâll help.â
âYou donât mind?â she whispered.
âNot at all.â
âMackenzie,â Emma said, trotting out her firm but kind mom voice. âIt was very nice of Jack to invite us out on his boat, wasnât it?â
Sniffling, she nodded her head.
âBut now we have to help him clean so he can put his boat away. If we donât help him, he might not want to invite us out again because we left him with a mess on his boat.â
Mackenzie stared at her mom, her wide eyes looking troubled.
âMaybe if you help us clean up, then you can ask Jack if heâd take you out onto his balcony and maybe heâll let you make twenty more casts into the lake.â
The prospect of twenty more casts brought a smile to Mackenzieâs face. Eager to help, she wiped the tears from her face and slid off the skipperâs bench. âYes, Mommy.â
Emma passed her one of their bags. âHere. You can carry this.â
âOkay.â
The three of us carried their bags to my car.
I chuckled and nudged Emmaâs shoulder. âWow. Youâve got the magic touch.â
âNot really,â she said. âSometimes it works, sometimes it doesnât.â
We made one last sweep through the boat. Everything looked good to me so we got off.
